About SRCC

The purpose of the Penn State Student Red Cross Club is to coordinate student activities relating to the programs fostered by the American Red Cross. These activities include: blood services; safety and lifesaving introduction; health fairs; youth services; and other projects agreed upon by the membership.

The Constitution

What do we do in the Student Red Cross Club?

  1. Blood Drives: volunteers in the club work to organize blood drives, obtain sponsors for drives, recruit donors, publicize, and actually volunteer at our numerous drives througout the academic year. Some of our members actually become OSCs, or On Site Coordinators, who coordinate other volunteers to ensure that the drive is reaching its fullest potential. Although it is not required, many of our members donate blood too! To learn more, check out our Blood Drives page, Volunteer page, and OSC page.
  2. CPR Training: several of our members have become certified CPR instructors. These amazing volunteers work to teach students and community members how to properly conduct CPR. They work hand-in-hand with the Centre Communities Chapter of the American Red Cross to conduct these classes.
  3. Disaster Preparation: every semester, members of SRCC have the opportunity to undergo a day-long certification in disaster training. During this course, students learn what to do in the case of an emergency. These certifications enable members to help at Red Cross disaster sites.
  4. Youth Education Programs: several of our members have taking a training course in teaching water, fire, and home-alone safety courses to teach children. These members are able to go into local elementary schools to work directly with children.
  5. THON: our club is actively involved in the Penn State Dance Marathon, or THON. We have two amazing families, the Heck family and the Angus family, who have opened their hearts and their homes to us. We join these families to help combat pediatric cancer. To learn more, check out our THON page!
  6. Socials: from bowling to picnics to semi-formals, members of SRCC enjoy hanging out with one another outside of volunteering. In previous years, we have participated in Relay for Life, Homecoming, and had just about every social under the sun that involves food! For information about upcoming events, check out our “Events/Meetings” page.
  7. Chapter Services: periodically throughout the year, we help the Centre Communities Chapter of the American Red Cross with their various projects. These include office work, phoning donors, volunteering at food drives, and more!

Red Cross Mission

Since its founding in 1881 by visionary leader Clara Barton, the American Red Cross has been the nation’s premier emergency response organization. As part of a worldwide movement that offers neutral humanitarian care to the victims of war, the American Red Cross distinguishes itself by also aiding victims of devastating natural disasters. Over the years, the organization has expanded its services, always with the aim of preventing and relieving suffering.

Today, in addition to domestic disaster relief, the American Red Cross offers compassionate services in five other areas: community services that help the needy; support and comfort for military members and their families; the collection, processing and distribution of lifesaving blood and blood products; educational programs that promote health and safety; and international relief and development programs.

The American Red Cross is where people mobilize to help their neighbors—across the street, across the country, and across the world—in emergencies. Each year, in communities large and small, victims of some 70,000 disasters turn to neighbors familiar and new—the more than half a million volunteers and 35,000 employees of the Red Cross. Through over 700 locally supported chapters, more than 15 million people gain the skills they need to prepare for and respond to emergencies in their homes, communities and world.

Some four million people give blood—the gift of life—through the Red Cross, making it the largest supplier of blood and blood products in the United States. And the Red Cross helps thousands of U.S. service members separated from their families by military duty stay connected. As part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, a global network of 186 national societies, the Red Cross helps restore hope and dignity to the world’s most vulnerable people.

An average of 91 cents of every dollar the Red Cross spends is invested in humanitarian services and programs. The Red Cross is not a government agency; it relies on donations of time, money, and blood to do its work.

SRCC Poem

By: Caroline Pember
SRCC —
Friends like these are hard to find,
My fellow Student Red Crossers are one of a kind.
They are the ones I know I can trust,
Their smiles and their laughter is something I lust.
A family, we are, one hundred percent,
Our love for each other simply can’t be bent.
We always enjoy when everyone’s around,
In the club meetings, blood drives, or with the Blood Hound.
Volunteering for the Red Cross is what we do,
Our passion for blood donation can be seen through and through.
Helping others is what joined us together,
But we are now Best Friends, Forever and Ever.
